How does it work today?
When you set a price in a public or member price group, you define a gross price — the price including VAT that the driver sees. For example, you set £2.00/kWh.
When a driver charges and 25% VAT applies, everything works as expected: the driver pays £2.00, of which £1.60 is your net earnings and £0.40 is VAT.
But when no VAT applies to a session — for example, in a B2B reverse charge scenario — the gross price stays £2.00, and because there's no VAT, the full £2.00 becomes your net earnings. You earn more from the exact same price setting, just because the VAT treatment differs. That's inconsistent and makes your revenue unpredictable.
What's changing?
We're changing the calculation so that your net earnings stay the same regardless of VAT treatment.
The change is simple: when no VAT applies, we adjust the gross price down (instead of the net price up). This means:
- With 25% VAT: The driver pays £2.00. You earn £1.60 net. (No change.)
- With 0% VAT: The driver now pays £1.60 (instead of £2.00). You still earn £1.60 net.
Your net earnings are locked. What changes is the price the driver pays in 0% VAT scenarios — it goes down to match.
Example
What this means for you as an operator
- No action required. The change applies automatically going forward. Your price group settings stay exactly as they are.
- Your earnings become consistent. You earn the same net amount per session, no matter how VAT is handled on the sale.
- Historical sessions are not affected. This only applies to sessions from the release date onward.
What this means for your drivers
- Drivers in standard VAT scenarios see no change — they pay the same gross price as today.
- Drivers in 0% VAT scenarios will see a lower price, reflecting that no VAT is being added.
Hub update
The price group settings in Hub will also be updated to better reflect this logic. When you set a gross price, you'll be able to see the corresponding net price — making it clearer what you'll actually earn.
Scope
This update applies only to public price groups and member price groups. Roaming price groups are not affected — you already define the net price when setting up roaming price groups, so they already work this way.
